Theoretical and Numerical Analysis of Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws

This course is devoted to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, the most famous example of which is gaz dynamic (studied during the course). Both theoretical and numerical aspects are emphasized during each class of three hours. There are therefore a double table of contents which are followed in parallel.

Theoretical part

  • Mathematical introduction : conservation laws and first order partial differential equations, motivation and physical examples, hyperbolicity of systems, finite time blow-up of smooth solutions, notion of weak solutions, Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions, shock and rarefaction waves, entropy conditions.
  • Theoretical analysis of scalar equations : a brief account of existence and uniqueness, Riemann problem.
  • Theoretical analysis of system of equations : entropy, symmetrizability, constant coefficient linear systems, definition of wave types, truly non linear fields and linearly degenerate fields, Lax criterion, Riemann problem.
  • Gaz dynamic : entropy and thermodynamic, isentropic model, lagrangian formulation, a brief account of how to solve the Riemann problem.
  • Numerical part

  • Numerical introduction : Finite differences, stability, consistency and accuracy of numerical schemes, conservative schemes, Lax-Wendroff theorem.
  • Numerical schemes for scalar equations : 1-D Godunov method, monotone and entropic schemes, second order TVD schemes, Van Leer MUSCL method.
  • Numerical schemes for systems of equations : Godunov and Godunov-type schemes (with exact or approximated solver of the Riemann problem), Roe scheme, relaxation schemes.
  • First day of class: Thursday, October 21, 2021, from 09h30 to 12h30, at CMAP, Ecole Polytechnique. Some material for the course can be found at: the Moodle web page of the course where you can access if you are a regularly registered student. The final exam will take place on Thursday, January 6th, 2022, from 9h30 to 12h30, at CMAP in Ecole Polytechnique, seminar room, 3rd floor, wing 0 (the usual class room).

Written exams of the previous years :  2010,  2018,  2019,  2020,  2021. More exams in French: there.

  • Computer programs

Below is a list of a few simple programs, written in SCILAB (freely distributed by INRIA ; see Scilab ) which are illustrative of this course. These routines come with no warranty and have not been updated since many new versions of Scilab (sorry about that). Thank you for reporting any bug to gregoire.allaire_AT_polytechnique.fr ).
