Fracture and Damage : Formation and propagation of singularities in continuum mechanics

Winter School (Jan. 30-31st, Feb. 1st 2008), Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris

The ANR project "MICA" and the Centre Emile Borel (Program "Singularities in mechanics: formation, propagation and microscopic description") organize a three days school on fracture and damage in continuum mechanics. The goal is to deliver three introductory lectures on the modeling and mathematical issues of fracture growth and damage:

- The variational approach to fracture (Gilles Francfort, Institut Galilée)

- Rupture avec énergies de surfaces cohésives : des critères d’amorçage aux lois de fatigue, l’apport de l’approche variationnelle (Jean-Jacques Marigo, Laboratoire de Modélisation en Mécanique, Université P. & M. Curie, Paris)

- Regularity of the minimal segmentations for the Mumford-Shah functional (Guy David, Université Paris Sud)

These three courses are designed for students or researchers, not necessarily specialist in the field. Participants are welcome to apply before January 16th to give a mini-talk (20 min). Please send an e-mail to the organizers. The registration is free but mandatory.

A limited amount of financial support is available for participants applying before January 7th. This should cover traveling costs and/or accommodation during the school. Please send an application letter and a curriculum vitae to the organizers.
